A while ago I was asked about input on what defines an advisory board and I tried to write down a short definition. My thoughts here are that this short example both should serve as guidance for the board itself, as well as showing the commitment towards sponsors, speakers and participants for in this case a conference. Hope this can be something of use to you as well!
The Advisory Board
Definition
The Advisory
Board is comprised of leading experts in systems development. These experts
work with the team to create relevant conference session content to give you
the information and ideas you need to succeed in the IT-industry.
Roles and Expectations
The
Advisory Board provides valuable and necessary input into the event development
process. Through a series of conference meetings every other month and
associated communications, the Advisory Board suggest, advise and assist with
the review and selection of submitted conference speakers and topic proposals.
Additionally, Advisory Board members might be called upon to either speak
themselves and/or offer advice and suggestions on speakers and topics that
could be of interest to the conference.
Commitment
All
Advisory Board members are required to:
- · Serve
a two-year term
- · Attend and actively contribute during conference meetings
- · Attend at minimum 80% of the scheduled board meetings or provide notice of absence
All Advisory Board members are expected to:
Assist with
the conference process for the conference held annually by actively participating
in selected scheduled planning meetings designed to program those events when
called upon.
Volunteer
to speak when available and if needed at pre-conference marketing could be live
at site, in webinar or recorded marketing film.
Advocate by
actively promoting the conference, spreading the word about open calls for
speaking proposals, and sharing volunteer advisory board opportunities among
your professional networks.
Selection Criteria
The board
is selected, to the extent possible, to create a working group balanced by:
experience level, years in profession, industry sector, geographic location and
area of expertise. Considerations for selection include:
Professional
experience and knowledge of the IT industry, system development, potential regulations,
policies, procedures, best practices and theory
Not
currently active on any other advisory board locally regarding the same topic
